How's Your Sex Drive?
If you’re in your 20s or 30s and your sex drive is low, you came to the right place. The fact is, women of all ages are experiencing problems with low female libido, sexual arousal, and decreased sex drive.
However it probably seems worse than it is because we are constantly being convinced through TV, movies, ads and other cultural elements, how our sex life should look. We get a visual picture of what a perfect relationship should have and it creates a lot of pressure.
And that’s not fair, because everyone’s sex drive is different.
However being young with balanced hormones does normally mean you’re going to have the urges more often than not.
So if you’re a young woman with a low (or missing) sex drive, let’s talk about why!
What are the symptoms?
- Very little or no interest in sex for six months or more
- Never or rarely having sexual thoughts or fantasies
- No interest in initiating sex
- Lack of pleasure from genital touch
- Difficulty enjoying sex
Your sex drive will fluctuate throughout your life depending on physical and hormonal changes, emotional factors, and relationship issues.
It’s more common than you think...
If you’re experiencing these things, you’re not alone. Studies show that 1 in 4 women for reproductive age have low libido. Studies also show that Americans are having less sex now than they did a decade ago (not by too much but still).
The most interesting thing is that doctors rarely take low sex drive as a serious issue. And why should they? Probably because it can be caused by some serious hormone imbalances that can wreak havoc on your health! Sex drive is important and specifically, having orgasms. Orgasms actually improve your overall hormone health, which we will dive into later.
Why the Low Sex Drive?
There are many factors that can contribute to low sex drive and some of those just come naturally with life. They can be emotional and complex, normally including topics like your relationship status, how you feel about your
relationship, how you feel about your body (body image), or any history of trauma or sexual abuse.
Other factors, day to day can be high levels of stress, anxiety and depression. It can be helpful to work with a therapist to better grasp these complex issues and to work through them.
Some of the other factors that contribute to the low sex drive are physical and we can work through them to rediscover your sex drive!
1. Taking hormonal birth control. Low libido can be a side effect of taking hormonal birth control because it decreases the production of testosterone in your body (and testosterone plays an important role in sex drive in both men and women). *Solution: If you’re using birth control to regulate you body, there are other lifestyle changes to bring your hormones back into balance naturally. When you eat right, exercise and pay attention to your body you can bring it back into balance. S’moo has also been known to help. There are options for non-hormonal birth control (condom, diaphragm, spermicide, the copper IUD) so you can regulate your hormones the natural way and get back on track.
2. Not enough Exercise! It’s true, you’re probably not getting enough! Studies show that exercise can help improve sexual desire and arousal. Exercise can be helpful in boosting libido. Even stretching can help, it gets your body moving, your blood flowing and can get you ready for even more exercise!
3. Iron Woman! Doesn’t have the same ring to it as Iron Man… well either way Iron deficiency has been connected to low libido. You can have an iron deficiency during menstruation or pregnancy from blood loss. If you’re tired or have no drive to sex at all, it might be a good idea to have your iron levels checked.
4. Hormone imbalances. Here at S’moo we talk about this a lot! It’s tied to so many symptoms that are completely avoidable. If you suffer from symptoms like acne, severe PMS, painful or heavy periods, irregular periods, bloating, migraines and/or hormonal headaches, it’s likely that you’re living with an underlying hormone imbalance. Following our blogs on how to re-regulate your body, plus taking a daily scoop of S’moo will get you back on track!
5. Low Cholesterol. Embrace healthy fats so your body can make sex hormones! Eat more avocados, use coconut oil and olive oil. Snack on nuts and seeds, and small oily fish like sardines—help support healthy levels of good cholesterol in the body.
It’s possible to reset your body, and rediscover your sex drive. Your health is up to you and so is your sex drive, it isn’t lost! Making health choices and being in-control of your body will get you back to yourself once again!
